Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Node.js or npm installed?

No. The desktop app bundles everything it needs. You do not need Node.js, npm, Python, or any development tools. Just download and run.

Will I lose my existing memories if I switch from CLI to the desktop app?

No. Both the CLI and desktop app use the same data directory (~/.claude-memory/). All your existing memories, knowledge graphs, and learning data are preserved and accessible from either version.

Can I run both the CLI and desktop app?

Not simultaneously on the same port. However, you can switch between them freely. The desktop app uses the same configuration and data files, so transitioning is seamless. We recommend using one at a time.

Is it really free?

Yes. SuperLocalMemory is open-source and free to use. The desktop app is a native wrapper around the same open-source core. No subscriptions, no feature gates, no usage limits.

Why does macOS warn me about an unidentified developer?

We're finalizing Apple's official verification. In the meantime, right-click the app, select Open, then click "Open" in the dialog. Or go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway. This is only needed once — the app works normally after that.

How does the desktop app connect to my AI tools?

The app runs a local MCP (Model Context Protocol) server on your machine. On first launch, it automatically detects and configures Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT Desktop, and other supported tools. No manual configuration needed.

Prefer the Terminal?

SuperLocalMemory started as a CLI tool and the full-featured CLI is still available.
